Anarchy Online - a second life for me

Got something related to in-game that doesn't really fit elsewhere? This is the place.

Anarchy Online - a second life for me

Post by Behemoth » Mon Aug 03, 2015 1:50 am

Big hello to all !

I am a "former AO-addict", i played AO on a daily or semidaily basis for like 5 years overall, until 2013 or around there.
Quitted (i dont feel myself really "quitted" tho - i keep thinking and MISSING the AO feeling since then) when they limited the number of "active chars" / account.
I remember that then was my stop-point and i said that clearly this is against froobs and i was so upset that i said to myself "enough is enough - bye"

But...this "bye" was only typed on the screen, never felt within my heart.
For me, AO was much more than a game, for years i submerged myself into that world and music and sounds and feelings...
Heck... i even had times when i was eating in real life and imagined im in Clondyke and having lunch there at the bar, keeping in mind those images and sounds from the game, and let me tell you that food was never that delicious before ha ! - thats how powerfull the AO world was for me.
Only an example, maybe with a little drama-feeling on it but, oh well...
Ok, enough emo stuff lol !

Thing is i miss AO A LOT and i really REALLY want to give it another try, but for the last days i kept reading about changes, patches, new developer (with CRAZY bad ideas btw imo - probably hes thinking to make this into some sort of korean-style grinding game or what ?), and what concerns me the most after all this reading is the thing about the population...

Its the game dead or really dead ?
I remember it already started dieing before those char/acc changes but wasnt THAT severe how it is now (from what i red).

So help me out, i remember lots of ppl here on the forums, old timers and RESPECT for your dedication and love for this game - i KNOW how you feel about the game,i feel the same way, but also lots of ppl gone it seems :(
Any feedback about the game's current state would be greatly appreciated.
And cheer up ppl - there is hope for the game, always was !

The new engine brought back quite a few people, as did the birthday event.
Temporary? Maybe. We'll see.
The Re-Animator even managed to resurrect Meany and Biancha among others.
No small feat in my eyes.

The new dev ideas are.... actually quite okay.
Rebalancing is actually happening at reasonable pace and the new starter area is, surprisingly, quite awesome.
So far, Michizure's appearance has been pretty much the best thing happening to AO within the last decade.

Multiboxing got out of hand a bit, but unless you happen to be a die hard pvp-monkey, you'll probably not even notice that trend.

Now... come and have a look yourself.

Hi Behemoth and welcome back :)

I returned last month myself, and I "quit" around at the same time you did.

Without having done any real measurements at all, I can only say the game feels definitely not dead. I've joined House of Black Star, a large neutral organisation, and have seen 10-25 people online pretty much every day in my org alone. I used to play on Rk1, so even people who've played for many many years but on Rk2 haven been new people to meet.
I've also had pick up teams in totw and foremans :)
The only way to find out if you consider there to be enough people is to give it a try. For me, there are enough.

On the new development... you'll have to also see that for yourself probably.
I'm usually really bad adapting to changes, and some of my characters will require me to update them in order to make them good again. For example my level 60 soldier with OMHH and my 200 doctor will need a different setup. Some others, like my enforcer, have become stronger and others are about the same as they were. I'll happily admit I'm excited about the changes though and especially on a new character it's fun to discover the impact.

There's one other thing I'm reaaally excited about, and since you mentioned details like the bar in Clondyke, I think you will appreciate it too. There have been many world changes, so it's fun exploring again.
Try hunting dyna's in Wailing Wastes, central Belial Forest or northwest Perpetual Wastelands and you'll notice it feels like a proper wilderness because AI cities have been removed. Clans have set up a base in the Enigma Forest and there are various new whompas. ICC HQ is a far more interesting place now. The new starter area is quite awesome as Rain said :) The rest I'll leave for you to discover.

See you in game hopefully ;)

Thank you both for the warm feedback !

For sure ill give it a try and im interested more in the gameplay changes (if any), because AO was never about graphics (maybe at the begining, close to when game was launched - were "bada$$" graphics back then lol ^^)
Looking forward to see those new class features and "balance" - didnt noticed or thought before that classes arent "balanced" or anything...

Anyway, i shall farm /played once more and flex at medusas while i leg-it-south in fear lol !

And welcome back also, Saavick ^^

I agree with Rain and Saavick. Initially, the re-balance changes were a bit of a pita to get used to, especially on my "finished" Adventy. But it was just a matter of checking out the re-jiggered nanos; the rebalancing didn't ruin any established toon. I think the changes are a clear improvement for any new player or existing players starting a new toon.

Just wish FC would have just put the now-wasted IP for Map Reading and Swimming back into "pool" with without the need for unequipping everything.

Environment changes are great, and that's even without the new engine. (Waiting for all the bugs to shake out)

I would like to see a froob raid take on those new level 250-ish Medusa bosses, and farm them all for high-level Miy.

You clearly do not have high level Doctor :-).

The game is as alive as you make it to be. Sure lot of old friends are gone (but many seem to be comming back) but there are new friends to be made. May need to join new active org and mingle with them, but the old spirit is still there.

Medusa hunt is really nice raid to do, and potentially even profitable. Go for it!

Sadly it seems that I will be more or less out form the game again - RL is starting to push after summer :-(.

Clearly you do not have a toon with upgraded C01 weapons either. :P Although the changed C01 weapons favoured new players a lot, they ruined plenty of (pretty expensive) endgame setups.

Don't think doctors got ruined though. If anything, the new heals are quite a buff for doctors. CH has been nerfed to 30s cooldowns, sure, but the old 8s global cooldowns on CH weren't any much better. Nano consumption wise, new heals are about the same as before. I think doctor changes mostly gives you more flexibility to healing now. BM/MM requirements are much higher, but the lowest improved heals should be easily achievable with any endgame setup (even specialised ones :P)

I digress though. Welcome back Behe/Saavick! Have fun with new recent AO changes for froobs. They sure make the game much more fun now for starting characters.

I been playing AO on and off from the release, never had a toon over 100 and just make my first million credit.................. last year. But I keep coming back and make new toons and making new accounts. Far as I can tell, the reason is no rat race. No: you have to get to max level as fast as you can because that's when the real game starts. Most of my toon are below 60 and I have 5 accounts of them. I like to say I am happy with this game but I think the most I can say about AO is I am content with it.
